autumn traditions

I love seasonal celebrations and Autumn has more than most for me, it’s a time of harvests, feasts and fancy dress.

The first party of the season for us is “Pie Day” (more about this family tradition here). This year it was held at a friend’s house and as usual we all contributed to the feast.

I had a particularly good harvest of Victoria plums from the allotment this year and made lots of plummy treats including, cakes, jam and cordial.

I have always celebrated Halloween, apple bobbing as a child, spooky film nights as a teenager and now with my own children dressing up and trick or treating (something about the roots of Halloween here and here).

My mum’s birthday is very near to Bonfire Night and for quite some time now I have hosted a little party for her with friends and family. We sometimes go to the allotment for a bonfire and fireworks but this year it was a bit too damp and cold. I got my firework fix at the local park where the free display was pretty amazing, a whole half hour of sparkling, exploding light.

I will keep up many of my Autumn decorations until they are replaced by Christmas ones….making the most of this special season.
