valentine wreath tutorial

I used some of my scraps of fabric to make this wreath. I’ve made it in time for Valentine’s day but I think it will probably decorate the house for a few weeks.

Here’s how to make it

Materials and equipment

wire (this needs to be strong enough to hold it’s shape, you could use a wire coat hanger)

fabric scraps of various colours and patterns,

twine or ribbon

fabric glue

scissors

stuffing

embroidery thread & needle

Technique

Shape the wire in to a circle and wrap the ends around each other. I made mine about 20cm in diameter.

Using one colour of fabric cut 1.5cm wide strips. I used about 60cm of fabric to wrap my wreath.

spottystrips

Carefully wrap the strips of fabric around the wire. Continue all the way around.

wrapping

Glue the ends of the fabric to secure, I used several strips of fabric.

Cut out 4 heart shapes, 2 large and 2 small. I used two different types of fabric to make the heart for the wreath.

hearts

Place the small hearts in the centre of the large hearts and attach with embroidery thread (3 strands) using a running stitch.

sewing

Put the large hearts together, wrong sides facing and sew together as above.

Leave a small gap to fill the heart with stuffing.

stuffing

Sew the gap together to finish.

Next cut some short strips (8 or 10cm long, 1 cm wide) of a mix of colours of fabric to make the ‘bows’ that will go around the wreath. It doesn’t matter if these are different lengths as you can trim them once you are done. I’ve got quite fiddly fingers so can tie quite short lengths of fabric, a longer length can make it easier to tie. Simply knot these pieces of fabric to make the ‘bows’.

Continue all around the circle.

Next make three tassels. To make these cut some more 1cm strips of fabric about 17cm long. I used 4 strips of fabric of mixed colours for each tassel. Lay the fabric strips on top of each other and fold over. About 2cm down wrap with the twine and tie 2 knots to secure.

Thread some more twine through the loop you have made at the top of the tassel.

Cut off one of the ends and use the other to attach the tassel to the wreath.

Finally sew a double length of twine to the heart and then tie this to the top of the wreath.
